A great honor and a huge challenge for China: You-you TU getting the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

Abstract: Public excitement over the award of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to the Chinese medical scientist You-you TU for the discovery of a herbal anti-malarial, may mislead the Chinese people into believing that traditional Chinese herbal medi-cine can be used to cure all disease without any ad-verse effects. The aim of this paper is to explain the advantages and disadvantages of herbal traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) objectively.

Chinese Summary  <35> 荣誉与挑战：论屠呦呦获得诺贝尔生理学或医学奖对中国的影响

概要：中国首位诺贝尔生理学或医学奖获得者屠呦呦与青蒿素的事迹引发对中医药的思考。在鼓励使用中医药的同时，呼吁理性思考其不良反应，并对相关临床问题进行阐述。对屠呦呦事迹的过度反应，也许会误导国人对中医药产生"包治百病而无任何副作用"的印象。为避免这种情况的出现，本文客观地阐述其优缺点，希望能够帮助国民理性看待中医药。
