Abstract:
The objective evaluation of complex odors, such as cigarette aromas, remains a significant challenge due to the limitations of traditional analytical methods in reflecting holistic sensory perception. In this study, we developed a bioelectronic nose by coupling the olfactory epithelium (OE) with a 64-channel microelectrode array (MEA) to emulate mammalian odor perception. The OE was stimulated using representative cigarette additives representing four different cigarette aromas and smoke samples from five commercial cigarettes. By recording the response signals at multiple sites within the OE, different spatiotemporal response patterns to different stimuli could be obtained. On the basis of these electrophysiological responses, spectral features were extracted and evaluated using multiple conventional machine learning classifiers. Among them, the Random Forest (RF) classifier achieved the best performance, reaching an accuracy of 96.83% for aroma recognition using only 10 highly informative spectral features. Furthermore, commercial cigarette recognition achieved an accuracy of 94.36% using a 50-feature subset. These results demonstrate that our new OE-based bioelectronic nose provides a sensitive and objective platform for complex odor analysis, showing great potential for tobacco flavor profiling, objective quality assessment, and quality control.
