Aims & Scope

Journal of Zhejiang University-SCIENCE A (hereinafter referred to as JZUS-A) focuses on Applied Physics, Mechanical and Civil Engineering, Environmental Science and Energy, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, etc.

Article Categories

The categories of frequently published articles in JZUS-A include but are not limited to Research Article, Review Article, Correspondence, and Editorial. Details are provided below.

Research Article

Submissions to JZUS-A are expected to present sufficiently complete research work and adequate scientific innovation. Manuscripts could be organized following a common style. The abstract should be fewer than 300 words. An introduction is required as the first section and a conclusion as the last section. Discussion as a separate section is optional, leaving it to the authors to follow the common practices of their research field. Other sections could be arranged and named freely by the authors themselves.

Conciseness is encouraged. Research Articles for JZUS-A are generally required to contain fewer than 10,000 words (including references) and 15 display items (figures or tables). Authors are highly encouraged to place some less-important paragraphs and non-core data, figures, or tables in a supplementary file, even if their Research Article does not exceed the above length and item limits.

Review Article

A Review Article submitted to JZUS-A should address a timely and important topic and attract a wide range of readers of the field. It should contain sufficient critical analysis and the authors’ own insight; manuscripts consisting merely of descriptive literature summaries lacking these elements will be returned directly. Review Articles are preferred from research groups with a strong record of original research, with the group leader as corresponding author.

To prepare a Review Article for JZUS-A, the abstract should be fewer than 250 words and an introduction is required as the first section. Sections reviewing the existing literature should follow a logical order, with additional tables or figures produced for clarity when necessary. Review Articles for JZUS-A are generally required to contain fewer than 15,000 words (including references, which are preferred to contain no more than 200 items) and 10 display items (figures or tables). Authors are highly encouraged to place some less-important paragraphs and non-core data, figures, or tables in a supplementary file.

Correspondence

Correspondence in JZUS-A covers article types that are too brief for publication as Research Articles or Review Articles. Authors may submit rapid, concise reports of important findings, discuss controversial or interdisciplinary topics, or offer comments on previously published papers.

Correspondence is limited to 2,500 words, 15 references, and 5 display items (figures or tables). No abstract or subsections are required for this article type. Nevertheless, the opening paragraph should provide a concise yet comprehensive overview of the work. Electronic supplementary materials are also available for this category of article.

Editorial

An Editorial is usually a short article written by members of the editorial board of JZUS-A, the journal editors, guest editor(s) of a special issue, or invited distinguished scholars. Editorials aim to shape academic perspectives, foster critical thinking, and encourage community action on relevant academic issues.

Double-blind peer review guidelines

JZUS-A adopts a double-blind review process. Authors are required to prepare a separate title page and a blinded manuscript.

  1. The title page should include the article title, author information, acknowledgments (including funding details), author contribution statement, and Disclosure Form.
  2. The blinded manuscript should include the article title, abstract, sections, and references, without any personal or institutional information.
  3. When referring to the authors’ own prior work in the manuscript, write in the third person to avoid revealing their identities. For instance, use the phrasing like “Wang et al. (2026) proved the Riemann Hypothesis” instead of “We proved the Riemann Hypothesis (Wang et al., 2026)”.

Paper Format Requirements

  1. At the submission stage, authors may retain their manuscript’s original format, provided that it is legible and contains all required information. However, only Microsoft Word (.docx) files are acceptable.
  2. Authors may refer to the following templates for manuscript preparation (optional) in the Download Center.

Ethics and Disclosure

Please make sure you have read and understood the following items and that all ethical requirements are fulfilled during the research and manuscript preparation.

  1. Authors must confirm that any conflict of interest has been disclosed in the manuscript, or state that no conflict of interest exists.
  2. All materials must adhere to high ethical and animal welfare standards. Any use of animals must be based on ethological knowledge and respect for species-specific requirements for health and well-being. For investigations of human subjects, an appropriate institutional review board must have approved the project and the informed consent must have been obtained from the study participants.
  3. All original data generated in this study that support its findings should be available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request.
  4. Any artificial intelligence tools utilized in the conduct of current research or manuscript preparation should be explicitly disclosed.
  5. Authors are advised to visit the journal policy page to check other policies of JZUS-A to avoid any other ethical issues.

Important: Please download and complete the Disclosure Form to address the above-mentioned points. Ensure that the completed form is inserted as the final page of the Title Page file.

IMPORTANT TIPS!

  • In the Add/Edit/Remove Authors stage, please select yourself as the corresponding author.
  • In the File Uploading stage, please make sure to upload the Title Page and the Blinded Manuscript in separate files (in Microsoft Word format), as the journal adheres to a double-blind review procedure.
  • In the File Uploading stage, please make sure you have included the above-mentioned Disclosure Form with checked boxes (click to download) within the Title Page file.
  • In the File Uploading stage, figures and tables may be uploaded separately; this is only recommended for large-size files. Supporting materials such as original data are encouraged to be uploaded as separate files.

3. Manuscript Status Tracking

The corresponding author can log in any time to track the manuscript status. Usually the WITH EDITOR status will last 2-7 days and the UNDER REVIEW status will last 20 to 80 days. If these statuses last an excessively long time, the author may write to jzus_zxx@zju.edu.cn for detailed updates. The journal will reply to inquiries only from the corresponding author.

4. Submit a Revision

For a revision request after initial editorial check, the authors only need to make necessary changes by clicking Submissions Sent Back to Author after logging in. Do not submit it again as a new submission, and there is no need for any point-by-point response at this stage.

For a revision following peer-review comments, please click Submissions Needing Revision after logging in. The authors are requested to include a point-by-point rebuttal and the revised manuscript (still double-blinded) with only color highlighting (no track-changes). Make sure the rebuttal is listed at the beginning of the manuscript as text (not as Supporting Materials). All files uploaded at this stage should be editable.

Guidelines after Acceptance

  • A DOI for your paper is immediately assigned upon acceptance. The authors can cite the paper in advance in their subsequent publications by the paper’s DOI link. For example, if the manuscript number is ZUSA-D-26-00666, the DOI link will be https://doi.org/10.1631/jzus.A2600666. The DOI link will become active only upon publication on SpringerLink.
  • The Editorial Office will do some language polishing and reference checking. The corresponding author would expect to receive a first proof within 7–10 days. Authors are requested to check this first proof carefully and strictly follow the journal’s format requirements at this stage (click to download). You will be asked to sign the copyright transfer agreement. Please return this first proof within 7 days.
  • Based on the first proof, the journal will soon put an intermediate version of your paper on our Article in Press column. Then the author may wait another 1-4 months for the second proof.

Please address any issue to yangsq@zju.edu.cn at this stage.

Article Page Charges

For manuscripts accepted by JZUS-A, an article page charge is applied to cover part of the publication costs. Upon acceptance, authors will be requested to pay a fee ranging from CNY 6,000 to 10,000 (approximately USD 870 to 1,450) per article, depending on the length and page count of the final published manuscript. In exceptional circumstances, requests for partial or full waivers of the page charge will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, particularly in cases of demonstrated financial hardship. WARNING! Any correspondence regarding article-publishing charges will only be sent from an institutional @zju.edu.cn email account. Please check carefully before making any bank transfer to guard against possible fraud.

Authors can choose the open access publication mode, either via a transformative agreement between Springer Nature and their institution, or by paying the article processing charge (APC, instead of Article Page Charges) of £2490.00 GBP / $3690.00 USD / €2890.00 EUR themselves.
